IRTG – Graduate Program

All IRTG doctoral candidates and associated members are requested to collect 45 credit points (CPs) from a structured curriculum organised by the IRTG, comprising a comprehensive study programme to ensure scientific advancement (33 CPs) and career development measures (12 CPs) with optional modules according to personal interests.

Enrollment at the OVGU and Graduation

Doctoral candidates will be enrolled as doctoral candidates at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNW) ofthe OVGU and will graduate according to the regulations of the FNW doctorate regulations for obtaining the degree “Dr. rer. nat.”.

MD candidates will submit their thesis to the FME, according to their doctorate regulations for obtaining the degree “Dr. med.”.

Eligibility for admission will be examined accordingly and in case of foreign or non-matching university degrees, the FNW admission committee may request the successful completion of an individual entry exam and/or participation in specific courses at the OVGU. Formal supervision of doctoral candidates and primary examination of graduations at the FNW is explicitly granted to the members of the faculty of medicine (FME) with a natural science background.

In the case of proven habilitation equivalency, the FNW also grants similar rights to young PIs upon application. Young PIs are mentored by more senior PIs within the CRC and will be advised by the IRTG spokesperson regarding the supervision of doctoral candidates and measures to achieve full independence.

The future doctoral students should register as doctoral student at FNW. This step has to be done as soon as possible as in case of foreign or non-matching university degrees, admission may be provided pending the successful completion of an individual entry exam and / or participation in specific courses at the OVGU.

Following guidelines apply to PhD program performed within the IRTG 1436 at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. They are additions to the general doctorate regulations which all remain valid.

Graduate education in the IRTG is designed for a 3-year graduation period. After completing this program, students can remain members of IRTG and continue to participate in the graduate program activities as available.

MD-Students

In addition to the PhD program, the IRTG 1436 offers short-term fellowships to outstanding medical doctor (MD) students. It will help to attract talented MD students to research in neuroscience at an early stage of career by offering them the possibility to accomplish their doctoral degree in frame of a 12-month fellowship plus professionalized training.

To be accepted in one of the CRC projects, the MD student has to prove successful completion of the first part of the medical examination procedure. A copy of the certificate has to be handed in to the IRTG program office at the time of application.

The MD student is expected to take time off from his study curriculum for the duration of the fellowship. A release note from the examining office has to be handed in to the IRTG program office at least 2 weeks before the fellowship period commences.

  • Usual time period: 01.10. – 30.09.
  • The average monthly grant is EUR 1095€ / person.

After the end of the fellowship period, the MD student remains an associated member of the IRTG and may participate in available IRTG activities
